Peel Castle

The ruined 11th-century castle on St Patrick's Isle, connected to the town by a causeway and just a short stroll from the Fernleigh.

The ruins of Peel Castle on St Patrick's Isle, Isle of Man

Peel Castle sits on St Patrick's Isle, a small tidal island joined to the town by a stone causeway, and is one of the most striking historic sites on the Isle of Man. The castle walls date back to the 11th century, built by Norse settlers on the site of an earlier Celtic monastery, and enclose the ruins of St German's Cathedral, a round tower and the remains of several other early buildings.

The site is cared for by Manx National Heritage and makes for an atmospheric walk at any time of year, with views back over Peel's harbour and along the west coast. It's an easy, level walk from The Fernleigh — just follow Marine Parade around the harbour and across the causeway.

Guests staying with us often combine a visit to the castle with a walk along Peel Beach or a bite to eat in the town, both only a few minutes further on foot.
